Ahh! A loaded question! Depending upon the size of the kitchen, I'm leaning towards the refrigerator covered in the same material as the cabinetry unless it's a commercial grade brand that you want to show off. For the remainder of the kitchen I prefer stainless.
In a small vintage or retro kitchen, I prefer all white appliances with a pop of counter top color. The sink is white, and the backsplash is white peppered with the color of the counter tops.
For a contemporary kitchen, all white with stainless accessories and drawer pulls. Bring color in with pendant lighting, placemats. and lumbar pillows.
I just completed an update just with paint. Gray is the theme, carried out in wall paint, smoked mirror backsplash, and black granite counter tops. The wall in the dining area got two coats of Benjamin Moore's Metallic Gray to add sparkle at night, and light during the day.
Lighting is an essential ingredient for a successful kitchen redo. Layer your lighting so you have ambient, task, and general lighting for total light control.
