Results of a just-released survey by Houzz showed
that, while bigger kitchens may not be trending, the open kitchen concept
remains strong, with 77% of those polled saying their new kitchen will be open
to other rooms of the house.
61% of remodelers are electing to incorporate
kitchen islands while 94% are changing
countertops. Granite and quartz top the
list of options. Tile and glass are the preferred materials for back splash
choices.
Stainless remains a strong appliance trend with 65%
compared with 16% who choose integrated appliances and 12% going with white or
colors. 7% are combining appliance finishes.
The appliance wish list is topped by chef’s stove at
32%, followed by 17% selecting double ovens. 9% choose an induction cook top,
7% opt for a wine refrigerator, and another 7% go for a dishwasher drawer.
49% of those polled stated the importance of
eco-friendly appliances and materials.
Decorative elements like color, cabinet selection,
lighting, or flooring weren’t included in
the survey. As an Interior Designer,
I’m finding that clients are gravitating towards either neutral wood, black or
white cabinetry, adding color to countertops, backsplashes, walls, ceilings, or
floors.
As often occurs with open concept kitchens, instead
of completely removing a wall, an island is created that separates the kitchen
from the rest of the home. Islands provide storage and serve as a dining
counter. One of my signature touches is to dress up the kitchen island that fronts
on a
dining or living room so that it is in keeping
with the design scheme of
the home.
Also important to homeowners is space for casual
dining either a counter with stools, table and chairs, or built-in nook.
Overall, it’s the kitchen’s amenities that make the
space not size. Bigger is not necessarily better; instead, creative use of
space, layout, and appliances are most important.
