Inspirational oceanfront palette

Nothing brings the sensation of the ocean indoors more than creating a room’s decorative scheme based on the elements we experience at the seashore.

Oceanfront color palettes are natural, and easy to live with. They engage the entire color family of blues and greens, light sand tones, soft driftwood and palm trunk browns, with surprising bursts of pink, red, and orange corals plus a splash of yellow from the sun.

The clean, clear colors and architecture of the beach lend themselves to a contemporary look. Classic use of wall color and surface treatments serve as a background for the clean, crisp geometric lines of contemporary furnishings in white or natural upholstery, spiked with blacks and browns. Add organic accent furniture in soft shapes covered in handmade fabrics. Chrome and glass characterize sunlight reflected off the ocean’s surface. Adding traditional pieces painted and/or upholstered in an ocean palette, accompanied by rustic accent pieces, takes the room’s décor from ordinary to surprisingly unexpected.

Floors can be light toned marble, travertine, or limestone to bring the look of a sandy beach inside, and blur the distinction between indoors and out. Stones are also cooler underfoot. Wood flooring maintains the natural look of the outdoors, and since they are warmer than stone, may be preferable in climates that are cold in winter. Hand woven natural-fiber rugs in light colors add pattern and texture. Kilims, dhurries, sisal, jute offer a lot of options and a variety of looks.

Simple sheers frame the view

Window treatments make or break a view. Keep them simple. Wafting sheer panels keep tempo with ocean breezes. If you need light control, install solar shades, plantation shutters, or blinds.

Keep the scale of accessorize large. Find giant shells, large hurricanes or lanterns with large columnar candles, sculptures of coral or driftwood. Use live tropical plants like bromeliads which are my favorite. They’re colorful and last forever! Orchids, also long lasting, add elegance and grace.
