LUXURIOUS LUSTER - A NEW DECORATIVE LOOK FOR THE HOLIDAYS

With Halloween barely behind us, and Thanksgiving 3 weeks away, you may feel it’s much too early to discuss decorating for the holidays. This blog may in fact be premature, but it’s with all good intentions of relieving some of the stress of holiday preparations.

Luxurious Luster is an alternative design scheme for holiday décor that I’m using for my clients’ homes this season. The title belies its resources. It can be curated with finds anywhere from the local thrift store to the local hardware store to a high end boutique. I’m collecting paper bags, newspapers and twine gathered on regular shopping trips for the purpose of recycling and transforming them into things of splendor.

The overall look is a departure from the expected red/green, blending different metallics together: gold, silver, and bronze. It works with any decorative style from traditional to minimalist contemporary. I’m decorating exotic topiary or wire trees, sometimes using clients’ jewelry. For table settings, I’m using their sterling silver serving pieces. The result is dazzling without being blinding, glittering without being glitzy, a dramatic without ostentation.

To accent all the metal, I blend in organics – either green in the form of a specie of tree, or vases filled with eucalyptus – it might be traditional in shape or a unique topiary design, swags, garlands, and wreaths. The traditionalists hold fast to characteristic evergreens. Alternatively, I use brown - pine cones, stacks of wood next to a fireplace, baskets, recycled brown paper bags or newspaper print for gift wrap stamped with holiday themes and tied with raffia or metallic ribbon.

With Luxurious Luster, less is more. Brilliance needs space to breathe; too much cramps the style and you lose the drama of the total look.
