CHINESE YEAR OF THE SNAKE

METALLIC SNAKESKIN SCREEN

It’s the Chinese zodiac’s year of the snake, stimulating renewed interest for everything reptile interpreted for both fashion and interior design arenas.

Reptilian fabrications have been around for years. Couture pieces have graced runways on and off for decades; fabrics and accessories are included in many a home decor.  However, they never earned the distinction as a classic that animal prints – particularly feline - have achieved. That’s about to change.

Reptilian patterns are currently featured in every fashion publication and have already become established closet staples. In the home, furnishings in rich patterns, textures, and colors provide infinite options to enhance interior design schemes.

What makes the trend fun, different, and interesting is that rather than adhering to images naturally found in the wild, colors span the spectrum; nature’s patterns are being imaginatively construed producing contemporary interpretations; and the context in which they are being used are far from natural habitats. There’s something feminine and very pretty about a pink snakeskin print pouf in a boudoir.

The peril of course, and there’s always at least one when it comes to trends, is overdoing. If you’re planning on upholstering a large sofa for example, make that the single piece in the room. Of course, you can add toss pillows, throws, and accessories in other patterns and colors, but keep an eye on scale and balance.
